I was chatting with one of the teachers today about the general idea that students in Maine lack the ability to think big, and think outside the state; he said they aspire only to a certain level then stop, almost as though Maine'ers are capped at a certain potential level of ‘success' while others states like New Jersey for instance send loads of students to the best universities and the best sport teams. He said they just need some students to break the mold and show that it is possible to think big and go far. And I agree to a certain point, it is important to dream, and important to set goals, but I think it is a little more complex than that, and I think it is why I have a problem with the much of the self help and positive thinking movement. Will every student who dreams of becoming a pro athlete do so; no. Will every student who aspires to become a rock star do so; no. How about become a movie star, or make the cut at a top university; no. So are they unsuccessful? Absolutely not!! So I think we must be careful at how we motivate and pump up our youth.
The real issue is when students become attached, or obsessed with reaching one of these goals, and invests their entire self interest in the achievement of that specific outcome. A common example of that might be American college football. The pressure these young students are put under, and put themselves under is enormous.
Last night I watched the documentary "Ten Questions for the Dalai Lama", and one of the last things he said applies well to this issue. He said the following words with a lighthearted giggle:
"As a Buddhist monk, so now my real wish is, I wish to remain in a remote area, like a wounded animal, and all the energy, all the time, concentrate on spiritual practice. And use my brain maximum way in spiritual field, without much expectation, if too much expectation, then last day I may regret."Â

Fionn Griffiths Interview
Now here's something you don't see every day - video footage of one rider interviewing another rider. Check out the video and blog Ryan wrote about Fionn:
While down at the Sea Otter Classic, I had a few moments to catch up with my team mate Fionn Griffiths.
She is a 25 year old pro DH and 4X racer, and after 7 years on the pro circuit, she’s at the top of her game. The 2nd place DH finish and 3rd place dual finish at the Sea Otter is a testimate to that.
If you’d like to hear more, have a look at the 10 minute interview below - though I appologize for the poor audio - it was hard to find a quiet spot, the helicopter half way through didn’t help either.
Ride On!

Best Results:
Won most major comps I entered over the four years I competed. Retired from comps in favor of a more creative style of riding for demos and videos.
Favourite Course:
Well since I don't race, I have to say my fave terrain is Oceanside natural, wave molded rock, and drift logs.
Hobbies:
Woodcarving, yoga, and just hanging out in the sun.
Favourite Tunes:
Always changing, but grooving on the aussie Xavier Rudd right now.
Favourite Movie:
Tough one again, how about Singing in the Rain, this is when actors could act, sing, dance, and do stunts no problem.
Favourite Book:
Just reading a Bill Bryson book right now, great writer. I'm a non-fiction kind of guy.
Inspirations:
Inspired by anyone who is truly having fun and doing what they love for work.
Heard Saying (Quote):
You miss 100% of the shots you never take. (Wayne Gretzky)
What Pumps you up:
Watching smooth, controlled, and dynamic riding.
What makes you mad:
silly little tweaky injuries
What do you do to relax:
rent a movie, or drink tea. Tea is good.
What makes you smile:
seeing youngsters get excited about riding after I do a trials demo
What do you enjoy most about riding for Norco:
well the bikes for sure, but the people I have the opportunity to work with, everyone I know at Norco is stoked on riding! The standards for sponsorship are great. The most important questions I can relate to being sponsored by Norco is "Are you having fun and sharing that feeling with others?"...I love it!!
Anything Else:
Get out there and ride hard, progress at your own pace, ride the way you want to ride; don't get too caught up with results, but instead, just enjoy the learning process, it's all about having fun, ridiculous amounts of fun!
